Surf Infrasound

Due to its coastal location, most of the coherent signals observed by the IS59 infrasound station in Hawaii are generated by surf. Numerous studies have been carried out on the mechanisms by which breaking waves generate infrasound. Results show that infrasound can be used to monitor ocean swell heights, determine breaking wave period, locate areas where waves are breaking energetically, and acoustically track alongshore traveling (peeling) waves .
